Self-tanning products usually contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is approved by the FDA for this use. DHA is a sugar molecule that bronzes the top layer of the skin within a few hours. The color fades in a week to 10 days as the skin naturally sloughs off. There is no clear evidence that DHA is harmful to humans if applied topically. Concerns about self-tanners come from the risk of inhalation or ingestion from spray tanners. If you use spray tanning products, you should weawr protective gear for thte mouth, eyes and nose. Although self-tanners provide some protection from ultraviolet radiation, these products should always be used in conjunction with broad spectrum sunscreens.
