What You Should Know About Botox Before Your Appointment

At Rodgers Dermatology in Frisco, Texas, and all over the U.S. Botox is one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments. Dr. Timothy Rodgers has treated thousands of patients using Botox with consistent and incredible results for those who have fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging, sun exposure, and other damaging elements.

During an initial Botox consultation, Dr. Rodgers creates a custom treatment plan to achieve your desired results. That may mean addressing lines across the forehead; between or around the eyes; around the lips; or on the neck.

Most people know a bit about Botox. They know it’s convenient as there is no anesthesia, downtime, or scarring required for the treatments to be effective. Most patients know that it’s a quick treatment that takes only a matter of minutes. And most people have an idea that results fully appear within a few days following treatment and last around three to five months. But are there things you don’t know?

5 Things You May Not Know About Botox

There are often questions and even occasional misconceptions about what to expect with Botox, so here are 5 things we want everyone to know before an appointment.

1. Botox targets the underlying cause of wrinkles and fine lines

Botox, also known as Botulinum Toxin Type A, targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines: the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, smiling, and raising the eyebrows over the years. We inject these muscles with Botox to temporarily reduce muscle activity and smooth these areas.

2. There is no right age to start Botox treatments

We’ve heard that some people have the idea that you should be at least 40 years old to start Botox, but that’s definitely not the case. It’s not your age that determines when Botox is right for you, it’s the severity of your lines. Everyone’s lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, such as cellular changes that may occur over time, a reduction of collagen, genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

Whenever your lines start to bother you, regardless of your age, come meet with Dr. Rodgers. He will help you decide if Botox is the right option, and if it’s the right time.

3. It probably won’t hurt (or only just a little)

While many patients experience almost no pain when receiving Botox injections, some have brief, mild discomfort during the procedure. This discomfort often depends on the location of the injection. If you are concerned about sensitivity during and following the procedure, Dr. Rodgers may instruct you to use vibration, ice, or even a topical numbing agent to decrease any possible discomfort.

4. You will look very natural after Botox

Some people have been concerned about looking “frozen” or unnatural after Botox, but this is not a concern at Rodgers Dermatology. This is a technique-sensitive treatment that achieves subtle results when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and experienced with Botox. Of course, Dr. Rodgers fits this bill. After Botox you’ll look like yourself except you will have less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done. (Check out these before and after examples.

5. Botox is safe and extensively studied

Approved by the FDA for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, Botox is generally considered safe. It is produced and maintained under sterile conditions to ensure the safety and health of our patients. Botox has a well-established track record backed by over 16 years of published studies. In fact, Botox is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind, approved for use in 98 countries. The safety and efficacy of Botox has been described in more than 528 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.
