Botox 101

Hands down, Botox is one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments at Rodgers Dermatology in Frisco, Texas, and all over the U.S. Dr. Timothy Rodgers has treated thousands of patients using Botox, and he gets consistent and incredible results for those who have fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging, sun exposure, and other damaging elements.

Dr. Rodgers is unique in that he really listens to his patients to learn about their goals, and then he creates a custom treatment plan to achieve those desired results. That may mean addressing lines across the forehead; between or around the eyes; around the lips; or on the neck.

Botox is convenient, there is no anesthesia, no downtime, and no scarring. It’s a quick treatment that takes only a matter of minutes, and we do it right here in our office. Before you come for your first treatment, here’s everything you need to know!

Botox 101

We get a lot of common questions and hear many of the same concerns, so we are going through those below to let you know everything you could possibly be curious about when it comes to Botox

Botox is Botulinum Toxin Type A

This is an injectable substance that temporarily blocks the signal from nerves to muscles. We use Botox for a variety of conditions, including the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles in the face and to reduce excessive sweating.

Botox targets the underlying cause of wrinkles and fine lines

Botox targets the damage created by the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, smiling, and raising the eyebrows. These repeated movements typically cause frown lines, crow’s feet, worry lines around the mouth, and forehead lines. We inject these muscles with Botox to temporarily reduce muscle activity and smooth the areas.

Botox is safe

Approved by the FDA for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, Botox is generally considered safe. It is produced and maintained under sterile conditions to ensure the safety and health of patients. Botox has a well-established track record backed by over 16 years of published studies. Botox is actually the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind, and the safety and efficacy of Botox has been described in more than 528 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.

You can start Botox at any age

While some people think you must be at least 40 years old to start Botox, there is no required age. It’s not your age that determines when Botox is right for you, it’s the severity of your lines. Everyone’s lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, such as cellular changes that occur over time, a reduction of collagen, genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

The process is quick and easy

Utilizing a finely gauged needle, Dr. Rodgers injects Botox into the muscles in your face that are causing wrinkles and lines. It takes only a matter of minutes, and Dr. Rodgers regularly receives ongoing training to ensure that he is providing the highest quality Botox treatments.

Getting Botox does not usually hurt

Many patients experience little or no pain when receiving Botox injections, but some do have brief, mild discomfort during the procedure. This discomfort often depends on the location of the injection and the size needle Dr. Rodgers is using. If you are concerned about sensitivity during and following the procedure, he may instruct you to use vibration, ice, or even a topical numbing agent to decrease any possible discomfort.

Results typically in one week

Patients typically experience results in about one week. In some cases, it may take up to two weeks for them to notice the maximum effect. Depending on the severity of the wrinkles, patients may not see deep wrinkles soften fully; however, with continued treatments, these deep lines and wrinkles may soften over time.

Results will be very natural

Some people are concerned about looking “frozen” or unnatural after Botox, but this is not a concern at Rodgers Dermatology. This is a technique-sensitive treatment that achieves subtle results when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and experienced with Botox. Of course, Dr. Rodgers fits this bill. After Botox you’ll look like yourself except you will have less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done.

Botox results last for a few months

Botox injections typically provide results for approximately four months. Dr. Rodgers recommends a follow-up appointment for additional treatments when patients notice their lines and wrinkles starting to deepen again. For the most long-lasting results, Dr. Rodgers also recommends that patients use the muscles being treated for approximately one hour following treatment to help ensure those muscles absorb the Botox.

Botox is priced based on quantity of units

As with most cosmetic dermatology treatments and procedures, Botox is charged by the quantity of units used during the procedure. During your initial appointment, Dr. Rodgers makes a personalized recommendation for the number of units to address your lines and wrinkles, and our staff will provide you with an upfront price so there are no surprises following treatments.
