There are several different types of hair loss, including:

  • Alopecia areata. Often beginning in childhood, this type of hair loss tends to develop quickly, often causing a few bald patches.
  • Male pattern hair loss. The classic type of hair loss, with hair thinning or baldness in middle-aged and older men.
  • Female pattern hair loss. Usually begins in midlife and slowly progresses. Women do not lose all their hair, like some men. Women may notice their part getting wider or their ponytail getting smaller.
  • Telogen effluvium. This type of hair loss starts after a physically stressful event, such as childbirth, high fever, rapid weight loss, or illness. Diffuse hair shedding occurs about 3 months later. Fortunately, most cases are temporary, and treatment may not be needed.
